Stake Conference

Some areas that I was reminded to focus on after attending stake conference this past weekend include studying the scriptures daily with our family and having Family Home Evening consistently, every Monday night, rather than hit and miss. The General Authority who was visiting our stake said he couldn't fathom his children leaving the house each day without first having family prayer.

There can always be an excuse for why we could easily skip one of these important areas that help to strengthen home and families, including busy schedules, not everyone being at home or awake at the same time.

I recommitted to having family prayer with my kids each morning, even if it means that the rest of the family isn't there, or is asleep, or what ever the distraction may be. Those who are at home or awake can still do this regularly. After all, there is a great scripture that says to "pray always."

“Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing—yea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth.” (D&C 19:38.)
I know that listening to this good counsel will bring the Spirit into our lives even more and ultimately help us to better handle the daily struggles in life in an effort to offset the evil influences that surround us.

Elder Marcus Nash told us of a young Latter-day Saint convert somewhere in South America who was enthusiastic about having FHE, but her nonmember dad refused to go along with it. She talked to her bishop about it and he asked if she has any stuffed animals. She did, so he suggested she have FHE weekly with them, and faithfully she did this for years. It sounds kind of strange, but she got into a really good habit of obeying this, and she developed a testimony of and learned a lot from participating regularly in Family Home Evening.

Because of her faith and obedience, she was later happily married and was now having consistent FHE with her new family.

Christopher had a band event two Monday nights ago and Kelly has Chinese class every Monday night. I told Hannah that since Christopher would be gone, we weren't going to have Family Home Evening. Later, I realized there should be no reason why she and I couldn't still have it together, so we did, just the two of us, and she was so happy.

I'll continue organizing and carrying out weekly Family Home Evening with just the kids and me, and hope that Kelly will some day find an adult Chinese class that meets another time.

We have been reading The Book of Mormon for family scripture study time and have recently begun reading the New Testament to support Christopher in his seminary class.

We don't seem to have trouble remembering prayer at mealtime or bedtime. I look forward to having our family's faith and closeness fortified by following counsel from stake conference and most importantly, modeling our lives after Jesus Christ.

You've inspired me to start praying and reading a few verses from the Book of Mormon as a family before James goes to work in the mornings. We always do as a couple at night but it's definitely time to include the boys. We started today! Thanks for sharing!

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

San Antonio temple weekend

Here am I (five months pregnant), with Hannah, Kelly, Lindsey, and Christopher, walking out of the San Antonio temple after our new daughter was sealed to us for time and for all eternity during a special, sacred ceremony, this past Saturday afternoon.  We were happy to have a wonderful group of guests in attendance with us, Kelly's two sisters, Debbie and Brenda, my sister, Julie, Kelly's mom and dad, my mom, my good friends Lorraine and Stewart, Carol and Rick, and one person from our ward, my buddy, Sue. Dinner later that night consisted of a feast at the Salt Lick in Driftwood, Texas, for some incredible pork ribs, cole slaw, and more. We strolled along the Riverwalk to show our visiting family members one of San Antonio's popular tourist spots.  It was a beautiful, windy day, the Saturday following Thanksgiving, in San Antonio.  We tried to find a corner with less wind to blow in our faces.  More photos of the family.  The family, strolling along the Riverwalk.
