Subway in Taiwan

Christopher and Lindsey are pictured below sitting out on the laundry room/patio area of our hotel room where it's sunny and warm playing with their Nintendo DS games.There is a Subway sandwich shop within walking distance of our hotel and we ate lunch there today. As I was about to sink my teeth into an Italian BMT, I almost wanted to cry because I was so happy. The meat tasted slightly different, but the bread had the right texture and it was tasty. This was my first meal out without chopsticks.

Every time I open up blogger now, it comes up in Chinese and I have to change the language settings to English. Same thing when I do internet searches, a lot of it comes up in Chinese and I have to keep searching.

Kelly got his new office and they were apologizing to him that it wasn't as big as his Austin space, and he told them it was not a problem. He also got to order his new cell phone that the company will provide so he chose an iphone and it will be here in a few weeks. They will provide a car for him, but he's not ready to brave the traffic. The roads are jam packed with people on scooters. They are everywhere and zip in and out all over the place.

We are going back to see our top two apartment picks tomorrow and will make a decision on that hopefully.

Lindsey is happy that she has met up with all five of her new college roommates on Facebook and will meet them in person in a couple weeks when the two of us go back to the states to get her checked in. I'm so going to have a donut when I get home. I know I talk about food a lot, but that's kind of a big deal to me. Have a great day, friends!

Hi again.... I know you love comments (me too!) so I'll try to leave them fairly regularly so you don't feel too "out there".

Can't wait to see some photos, and I'm surprised, yet not shocked about the ovens (lack of). wow, it's such a diff world.

Sounds like Christopher will really have the experience of his young life this year, and I hope he will be able to continue his Chinese language studies after this 1 year (if he likes it).

Keep up the food talk, it's fun, fascinating and very relatable (sp?) in an odd way!

Kelly, I have a feeling it's going to be a long year for you in the food department. You crack me up. You are already craving a donut and it has been 4 days!!! I feel your pain though. I can't hack eating three bites with a chopstick.

I'm loving the frequent updates. What an adventure! Can we mail you donuts? I'm glad Lindsay is with you and you get to come back to get her to college. The school choice sounds like it was guided, and I hope Christopher has a great time. Learning Chinese these days is a good idea and will benefit him in the future. Hang in there!

Food is a huge deal! I am loving hearing about your adjustment to Taiwan. I hope you find a place to live soon. Sounds like the school situation will be great for Christopher. He has such a great attitude about the whole thing. Thanks for the fun updates and good luck!!

I love subway. I think that is so great that you were able to have your first meal without chopsticks be something that you were sort of familiar with.

James and I spent a summer in Europe (not that it is even close to the adventure that you are having) but I didn't speak the languages of the places we stayed, and I have to tell you that I was always so excited to see a McDonalds even though the menu was so different. Food makes me happy, and we love to try new things and places, but we also love our favorite things too.

Triathlon triumph

Are you kidding me? A triathlon and I have never belonged in the same sentence. It must have been time for something new! (The "BEFORE" race shot, with goggles and swim cap in hand.) The BIG REVEAL!

We LOVE our new pool! There are a couple of problems that need to be fixed, so we're crossing our fingers that they get it done right, and soon, considering we have given them the final check for the balance of the pool, and we don't have any leverage. Three of the waterfalls work. This is the main one and I like the natural look. Below, here's the deep end waterfall, and it's flows nicely. The water sheer like this one, that flows into the shallow beach area, is the fall that is not working. It's frustrating, but hopefully they'll fix it soon. The fountain in the spa is blocked too. Here's the small rock waterfall, which works just great. It took about 18 hours to fill the pool and we practically watched it gallon by gallon. I stayed up all night long, making sure it didn't overflow. We swim in it every day. Last night we went on a midnight swim and it was beautiful. The water temperature is perfect. Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan....
