Happy Halloween! Christopher hosted a party on Saturday night and it was a blast.
We spent the day on Saturday preparing for the party and Christopher had fun "chocolatizing" a massive bag of pretzels we got at Costco. He transformed the salty snacks, then later changed himself into SUPER CHRISTOPHER for the Halloween get together with his new Taiwanese friends.
Everyone that we invited came! Plus three more! Here are Nancy and Ruth, both as gentle and kind as ever, and somewhat shy.
Most of them are in the Shakespeare play that we've been working on every week. Sophie wanted to convey to me how much she was liking the party and said, "Today, I'm happy!" I loved hearing that. Andy brought his friend, Edison. Jimmy brought his younger sister, Jill, who is not in the play.
People love karaoke here and really get into it. They call it K-TV though, which took me a while to figure out. The kids loved singing along to all these pop songs in Mandarin. It was so enjoyable for Kelly and me to see them having a fabulous time together. You can see them clapping along during one of the songs here.
Alina and Joy are so sweet. All of these youth are! I adore each one of them.
Joy plays Beatrice in the play, whom Christopher's character falls madly in love with and they get married.
Andy plays Beatrice's uncle in the play that I've been helping them with.
Christopher and Brian are anxious for the rest of the guests to arrive.
His mom and I had our handsome sons pose for a few pictures.
One of the games they played was Halloween Pictionary and Kelly helped to translate the words ahead of time.
Everyone signed their names in Chinese next to their English names.
It seems like everyone had a fantastic time.
Thomas, Ruth, and Nancy's dad brought most of the youth to our apartment in his van. He owns a laundry business and is working on his master's degree in civil engineering. He found out that Kelly plays the piano and organ and asked him to accompany for the priesthood session at next week's stake conference.
We ordered a giant party sub from Subway and it was a big hit.
We also played Halloween Bingo and they used M&Ms for their game pieces. The words were all in English and different people translated the words that they weren't familiar. I had to explain to them what "boo" means, which was one of the words. Halloween isn't a Taiwanese holiday, but we liked sharing our American tradition with them.
We told them that costumes were optional and some were excited to show up with a few accessories.

It's hard to describe the deep emotion that I already feel for these incredible young men and women, with whom I can barely communicate, but have met with every Wednesday night from 7:30 to 9:00 for play practice. They are simply wonderful and I love them to pieces. I just wish I could speak to them in Mandarin! And I'm sure they all wish that they could articulate their thoughts to me in English more clearly. Little by little, we're all working on it.
