Fun times with Mindi in town

Last Friday, Lindsey's friend, Mindi, arrived from Colorado for a visit. She just left for home today and each one wished that Mindi could stay another week to visit. Mindi and Lindsey have known each other their entire lives and even had their baptism service together when they were eight years old when we lived in Colorado. Mindi's dad, John, was Kelly's roommate at BYU, plus Kelly's family has been friends with Mindi's mom's family for years, going on many family ski trips to Vail, and other fun social events. Mindi, six weeks younger than Lindsey, has always towered over Lindsey in height, as you can see in the pictures below. They spent this past week as roommates in San Antonio at EFY and had a blast and a very uplifting week together. The theme at EFY this year was Power in Purity, which they really enjoyed and thought this was the best EFY yet. Saturday morning after Mindi arrived, we talked about going out to breakfast at Village Inn, but instead, Kelly and I made a huge breakfast of waffles, bacon, eggs, and hash browns. I left the last waffle in the waffle iron and forgot about it until Christopher smelled it over cooking. I suggested they take it outside to use as a Frisbee. I missed photographing the initial toss, but the kids pieced together what was left of the hard-as-a-rock waffle flying object. It was good, clean fun and they got a kick out of it. A few days later when I made waffles, Christopher unsuccessfully begged me to burn one.
Lindsey's other friend, Zach, has been basically living at our house since he's been in town. Christopher, who idolizes Zach, is going to be so sad when they move in a couple of weeks. They're selling their house and heading back to Taiwan where they live most of the year.
We took Zach and Mindi out to dinner at the Oasis on Saturday night. There was a long wait of about an hour, so to pass the time, I stayed preoccupied by taking several pictures of everyone for entertainment.
Lovely pose of Christopher trying to be silly leaning into the cactus.
Here they all were posing by the cactus and Zach actually accidentally got pricked by it...ouch!
We're getting hungry by now. Is it going to be worth the long wait?
Zach tried hard to not smile in most of the pictures and was hoping to be "dern sassy," as he called it. That's not what he was originally expressing. However, I encouraged him to change the word he was actually striving for in his modeling, and came up with "sassy" as a close replacement. I convinced him that a 16-year-old LDS young man shouldn't be trying to be "dern sexy," and he agreed. "Why are moms always right about things like that?" he asked.
On Saturday morning, Lindsey, Mindi, and I got manicures and pedicures and here we are creating a lone star with our lovely nails.
Before heading off to EFY the next morning, Zach and Austin came over to hang out with Lindsey and Mindi for a few hours and they had a ball. As he was leaving, Austin (pictured here with the girls) said, "next time, the party is at my house!" So last night after they got home from EFY, he had them over with a few other kids and they had one last hoorah before Mindi's departure. Mindi and Austin became each other's C.O.W. (crush of the week) and were sad that they might not ever see each other again. In the meantime, they've sent each other literally hundreds of text messages this week.
Here's a quick pose of the girls before Austin's party.
We took Mindi to the airport this afternoon. Lindsey and she will see each other again sometime soon when Lindsey and Christopher fly out to Grandma and Grandpa's house in Colorado the end of July through mid-August. What a fab week for these too best friends!

It looks like you are basically the coolest mom ever. I am so glad that you have such a good influence on not only your own kids, but those around as well. I too love the manicure, red is such a great color on you.

It looks like all of them had a blast together. It is great to have special friends like that, that would be very exciting if they go to college together someday and are roomies. They are probably already plotting that, and Kelly you are probably dreading it like my Mom did!

I love reading about your daily life doing "mom stuff" - it's inspiring!
Okay...
the manicure star can be cropped and used in either cards, or some fun mini-album for the girls - that custom symbol will bring them great memories - plus it's so cute/clever!
Also...
the girls are so cute, Mindi is tall (well, I know...) and she & Austin looked pretty cute together. Is he LDS too?
And....
the frisbee waffle was GREAT!

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
