Baby shower for Kellie

Tonight I hosted a baby shower for a new friend, Kellie, who moved here a few months ago with her husband and daughter, that I met through our church. They're expecting their first son so we all celebrated with her. I had my favorite local florist, Lakeline Florist, put together this arrangement for a centerpiece. Earlier today while I was getting the tables set up, I babysat cute little Scotty, while his mom, Sherrie, my friend and neighbor, played tennis. He's such a sweetheart. He actually likes getting his picture taken.
Everyone on the evite asked "What can I bring?" for the shower, so I decided to take them up on it, and came up with a menu of Hawaiian Haystacks for tonight. Easy. Everyone told me in their reply what they would bring to build our edible masterpieces. RuthAnn was telling me as we were socializing in the kitchen after the shower had begun, what a good idea this was because everyone will show up that said they would. I agreed. Then we realized that the binding ingredient, the gravy, hadn't arrived and it was a half hour past show time. After a phone call to confirm that the gravy was not in transit, Elizabeth came to the rescue and whipped up some tasty chicken gravy from scratch for us, using chicken broth and flour from my pantry, then added the diced chicken that she had brought. It turned out really well.
We had a table set up in the kitchen and another in the dining room. Kelly came home from work so he and the kids could fill the red and black balloons with helium and tie them to the backs of the chairs, but somehow I didn't get any pictures of those. (Thanks for the help, Honey!)

Waiting for the gravy to cook, I asked everyone to pose with one foot to show off their shoes because I'm very jealous of ANY shoes besides the ugly boot I've been wearing FOREVER to help mend my stress fracture. (I have even had dreams of wearing high-heeled shoes recently, that's how desperate I am for my cute shoes.)
So here's a different pose with me joining in the semi-circle (in the red blouse, below) sporting my lovely boot. Now I'm sure YOU are jealous of me. No? Hmmm. I'm so sick of wearing the boot. It's an embarrassing, pathetic fashion statement. My foot has been injured since JULY! How long does it take for a stress fracture to stop being stressed?!
Still waiting for the gravy, I thought I'd snap a picture of the cupcakes that Joy brought. They had Skor bar pieces on top. Yummy. Thank you, Joy! They were very pretty and festive, and I know she was worried about making "the ONE dessert."
Two fabulous women, Paige and Lonna. I love these friends. Maybe it's because I've had baby showers for them too. No, it's just because they are awesome.
We're getting hungry! Here's Tracy, Sue, and Dessie in the foreground. (below)
Finally, dinner is served. Here's my work of art on my plate (below). It was worth the wait! Thank you to everyone who pitched in to bring an ingredient, rice, chicken, green onions, tomatoes, cashews, toasted coconut, pineapple, celery, cheddar cheese, chow mein noodles, and French bread. It was an easy breezy dinner. Thanks for bringing the dark chocolate candy, too, Cheryl B.
After we dined, Kellie opened her gifts. She got a lot of really adorable little baby boy outfits. Here are a few.
This was one of my favorites (below) from Lindsay.
Kellie, we're glad you moved here and wish you the best on the final stretch of your pregnancy. Pun intended. I hope your little Seth, assuming you stick with that name, is as precious as your sweet little daughter. Good luck and congratulations from all of us.

I am always looking for a good way to meet and mingle with everyone and you are the perfect source. You are so much fun and always up for a party or get together of some sort, even if you are stuck in a boot. It was a very fun night, thanks so much for all that you do. You are wonderful.

Ok, looove the place settings...right up my alley :)

Darling yummy cupcakes. Cute pics of all my cute friends that I miss so much. What a fun shower.

I am thinking...now that you're done with PC, you should start a new business as "The Shower Planner" and call it "Showers by Kelly" ha ha. You really through a great party and I'm so glad that I was able to be one of the people you threw a shower for. I loved my shower, it was so beautiful!

You are kind to host showers for so many women--I am sure you make everyone feel loved. And your decorations are always so fun! (I love the black and white plates, too.) The Longhorns shirt was a fun gift! And I always wanted to name a boy Seth--but then I married a Smith, so there went that idea.

I was so sad I missed this! I have a gift all wrapped, I still need to drop it to her. After seeing all these cute pic's and everyones stylish shoes, maybe it's better off I didn't come. I don't think I could have competed!

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
