A week with Brendan

We had a really fun week with Brendan, my nephew, who flew home tonight to Las Vegas. By the way, we had to have a new hand rail added next to our pool to pass the city inspection, and here it is. I actually like it and didn't think I would. Christopher and Brendan swam a lot.
We took him out for barbecue and he loved it. How can you not?
Christopher is a rib guy.
Brendan is one year younger than Christopher, but he played well with Lindsey too. They made a lot of Shrinky Dinks this week.
Uncle Kelly rocked by filling up Brendan's iPhone with music and videos. Plus we all enjoyed playing Rock Band with him.
The two boys loved staying up late every night and slept in the game room.
We went to the park in River Place one afternoon and they had fun taking pictures of each other being airborne from the swings.
Brendan's one goal for the week was to go to Sea World and ride the roller coasters a ton. We finally checked that off his list yesterday. It has been a rainy week!
It still rained yesterday at Sea World, but after a while the crowd cleared out, which made it better for the kids to ride tons of rides since there were no lines.
We baked some Cinnaman Streusel Muffins today after church. Brendan thought I scooped the batter really well. I told him I was a professional. Years of practice. (Okay, so that professional thing was a stretch.)
Here we are just before I took him to the airport tonight. And since he's such a cutie pie, and literally a professional (model), he struck a few poses for me. I had him pose by one of the many posters I've seen of him in various Old Navy stores--I asked the Lakeline Mall store for this one when it was no longer being used.
He thought this was funny because this was taken more than a year ago and he looked younger.
Brendan was such a pleasant guest. He was so much fun to have visit and we enjoyed his company so much.
He starts fourth grade tomorrow!
As an unaccompanied minor, I got to escort him to the gate until he left. Remember the good old days when anyone could do that?
We were stalling for time, so we took a couple pictures. He was so funny, unlike most kids who eventually stop wanting their picture taken. He was always ready for the next click.
Are we done yet? Thanks for letting Brendan come see us for a week, Valerie and Sean! We love you, Brendan!

Holy Cow kelly, he looks just like you!

It's always so sad for the kids when their cousins leave.

Thanks, Jennie! I love when people tell me that about my nieces and nephews. That's the one thing I miss about adoption, even though people often say that our kids look like us. I always wonder in the back of my mind what our own genetic offspring might look like. I'm hoping that my kids' kids, our grandkids, will look a lot like their parents, so that will be exciting some day.

Those muffins sound DELICIOUS right now. I've been craving sweets for days. If only I had some of your famous Triple Layer Brownies...

He is such a cutie! And I agree with Jennie I think he looks a lot like you. You guys have the same sparkley eyes and great face shape!

I really enjoyed your talk yesterday too. I feel like I jinxed ya by talking about how long it had been for you and Kelly - then WHAMO there you were on the stand!

Looks like a great time! He is a cutie. I'll have to keep him in mind for my 4th grader (Gwen)as they grow up :0).
I didn't know Seaworld has roller coasters. We've had some of our best times at amusement parks in the rain (light rain). The kids were able to go on anything over and over again. Once you're wet, it really doesn't matter.
Nice pictures.
how fun to have a friend for a whole week - and one that loves to do fun things! i love sea world. i bet even though it did rain a little, it was a nice break from the heat. both times i have been have been in the high 90 degree weather. i could have used a little rain!! looks like a fantastic week. i think my next vacation might just have to be at your house. you guys sure know how to have a good time and take care of your guests!

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
