Birthday favorites

My sweet husband always picks out the most beautiful cards for me. The inside sentiment said, "Through all the changes life and love have brought us, one thing will always remain the same--you mean the world to me. Happy Birthday." The finishing touch included a sweet hand-written note by my darling husband. This picture was two days past my birthday, immediately following the Saturday evening session of stake conference, as we stopped for appetizers before heading home. This was the same day of the UT game that I blogged about in the previous post.
Early in the afternoon, I was setting up for a card camp which I was hosting that night on my birthday when the doorbell rang. On my porch bench was a box of fresh flowers. You can see the stacks of cardstock and ribbon, and rubber stamps in the background on the table.
Now isn't that a way to cheer someone up? The excitement continued as I unwrapped the bouquet and carefully took the freshly cut stems of the flowers from the vase to fill with water plus one of those little nutrition packets. My secret admirer loves me.
I had all the tables in the three rooms filled with supplies for my friends to come over shortly to make cards, so I placed my lovely flowers into the white bowl in the family room. Take a look outside the window and you can bare see the white lights wrapping around a live oak tree by our new swimming pool and spa.
Look who sent me flowers. I was very surprised and delighted!
Thank you, Mom! She loves me. Here are some more pictures taken more than a week later as the flowers opened up a lot more.
I finally discarded them today, and was pleased at how long they lasted and decorated my living room and brightened my day.
Now let's move on to how wonderful some of my friends are and celebrated my birthday with me. I went to lunch with our former Relief Society presidency and each of them had a lovely gift for me. The waiter asked if it was my birthday, then brought me this incredible dessert. We all took a few bites and I brought the rest home for my kids to enjoy. It was so delicious.
Several friends stopped by with nice gifts for me so I lined it all up on the bench here for a photo. Later, more lovely flowers were delivered by Michele, who had already given me something at lunchtime, plus I got a book "New York State of Mind," by Billy Joel, since she knows that I have fond memories from Kelly's and my 20th anniversary trip to NYC. I also got a massive box of Diet Coke and some beautiful white soup bowls from Jackie and Lonna, with two jars of soups one from La Madeleine, Tomato Basil...doesn't get any better than that, a basket of fresh produce from the farmers market from Sue L. with cute little notes on each item, a lovely compact mirror and special ring from Jill, a necklace and ear rings and key chain from Sue S., a pretty picture frame from with gem accents with my birthstone from Michele, plus a lime green blank journal to take notes in, a gorgeous Brighton necklace from Adele, and a Bath and Body Works soap (that smells very nice) plus a white and natural colored beaded bracelet set from Holly.
Cards and phone calls from all my siblings brightened my day. And later that night Sue brought by this tasty fruit platter for all of us to munch on during card camp.
Jenny made this incredibly tasty Lemon Pudding Cake with such exquisite tanginess, derived from four freshly squeezed and zested lemons, plus these Heavenly Chocolate Bites accented with a cheerful birthday greeting.
This was so much better than a cake! Everyone sang HB to me in between rotating around to different tables to whip up their paper creations. It was a wonderful day and I'm so blessed to have all these terrific people in my life. Thank you to everyone for celebrating with me! I do love my birthday, still.

Thank you so much for the lovely homemade card. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love it! It sits right next to my bed on my night stand. I love it! The picture is perfect. Enjoyed the birthday post. You are so blessed to have such wonderful friends.
Dang - I never get birthdays like that!

It pays to advertise. :} Of course I told eveyrone who was coming to my house for card camp that it was my birthday. Plus Facebook helps people remember. I always appreciate it when people tell me it's THEIR birthday too! It's your big day only once a year! Why not make a big deal of it? On years when I am discreet and just want to see who actually remembers it, it's always a pity party because most don't remember. I know I'm a spaz about this subject, but to me, birthdays are for celebrating!

I had a feeling that your Card Camp was going to turn out to be quite the party, and I wished I could have gone, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Darn! I'm glad you had a great birthday!

I am glad that you wanted to share the day with everyone, and sew on three cards per person too.

I think that those flowers were so lovely. What a nice mom. My own mother actually got my birthday wrong this year, how does that happen? Oh well, I am so happy that felt like it was a success. I enjoyed being there.

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
