Relief Society Stake Auxiliary Training

On January 29, our newly formed stake Relief Society presidency planned and carried out our first event together. Since it involves some of my favorite things (in addition to the whole spiritual aspect, which I will just lightly touch on here) from cooking to parties, to pretty dishes and tablecloths, to festive favors, I was all over this task. I presented three food combinations to the rest of the three women in our presidency and they liked it all, so had me decide. I chose the simple and pleasing Cucumber Dill Canapés paired with Chocolate Mint Silk Torte. Lorraine had brought a lovely large glass water dispenser and we used my little black and creamy colored bowls to catch the water. I wish I had snapped a photo of them together.
You can see all my Simple Additions platters, my Michelangelo forks, and my black toile salad/dessert plates. It's too bad the back of the piano and cinder block walls are part of the decor in the Relief Society room. We tried to spiff things up a bit, and it was an improvement. Ten wards times four per presidency, the maximum we expected was 40. We had 32 attend, so it was good, because I had 34 of my flatware and 35 of my plates. I knew that all of them wouldn't attend, so it worked out just right.
I asked Lorraine, our president, Sarah, our second counselor, and Kristina, our secretary, come over to our house the night before and taught them how to make the dessert. I asked each of them to build their entire torte themselves and they really enjoyed trying it. It's so much fun working with these wonderful women. I love them all to pieces and we've spent a ton of time together, as we've been visiting the other wards and meeting frequently.
We wanted to express our thanks to the ward presidencies for all they do and sacrifice to help all the women and families that they serve, so we gave them each a little small lotion from Bath and Body Works, and I made these little cards with their names on each one. Plus we included the following quote inside to express our sentiments.
"When we reach out to bless the lives of others, our lives are blessed as well. Service and sacrifice open the windows of heaven, allowing choice blessings to descend upon us. Surely our beloved Heavenly Father smiles upon those who care for the least of His children." --President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, (Ensign, November 2008, p. 119).
The food and decor and little mementos were a big hit with everyone. It was a relief to have worked together and have this over with. They all seemed to have been spiritually and socially fed well for the night, I'm pretty sure.

No, Gabby. She didn't know then, but knows now about my sweet skills and considers it bonus material.

I'm glad you appreciated it.

Sure, Jennie!
That torte looks so good. I am craving it! I remember making that last year, but it didn't look as good as that! You always do such a great job. You have such amazing talents. I'm always so impressed.

Yummy! I remember making those tarts for something else? I can't remember, but what I do remember is they were tasty. Oh how I miss your parties. (Not that I would have been invited to this one!) :)

PS Are you still planning on coming out in March?

I love all the colors! You always do such an awesome job. Your presidency is, as I am sure they know, very lucky to have you there to spiff things up!
It is truly a talent! I don't even know the difference between canapes and tortes (partly joking...emphasis on the partly), but I do know that it looked lovely and you did a great job!

I am wayyyyy impressed! Beautiful and delicious food is a blessing. since it is not one of my talents, I am especially appreciative. Going to Stake mtgs. is usually tedious. Your sisters are so blessed to have you serving them!

Holy cow, I really want a piece of that torte. If only I had your baking skills! I can barely make good chocolate chip cookies, perhaps I need a lesson from you!

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
