Triathlon triumph

Are you kidding me? A triathlon and I have never belonged in the same sentence. It must have been time for something new! (The "BEFORE" race shot, with goggles and swim cap in hand.)What an unforgettable week this was! I actually DID enter my first triathlon, with the goal of simply finishing it. Take note of the emphasis on the word FIRST, because I loved it so much, that you can guarantee that there will be more. It was a blast. Seriously. My friends Lorraine and Robin had trained and signed up to do the event, which was two days ago, on Saturday. Three days beforehand, I heard about it and basically had a spontaneous urge to join them, so I registered. The only partial preparation ahead of time that I had been doing was cycling in the neighborhood here and there on my mountain bike with some other friends. And doing some micro-laps in our backyard pool. Our friend, Dave, was also there. The three of us women appreciated Dave's encouragement and support, as he's a seasoned triathlete with a wealth of knowledge and tips to share. The four of us had such an awesome morning together, and I cannot fully express what a huge thrill it was to experience this triathlon. We started off with a 400-meter swim, followed by a 13.5-mile bike ride, then a 3.3-mile run. My emotions were so high on the last leg, that as I was running/fast walking the last mile and a half to the finish line, one elderly woman peered over her fence on crutches, shouting out a cheer of encouragement to me, and I was struck with an overpowering surge of gratitude that I had chosen to take this exciting journey, not really knowing what to expect. Seriously, my heart was bursting with joy, thinking of the many things that I am thankful for--to be able to walk, to run, and to not have plantar fasciitis, in either heel, as I have had in the past on multiple occasions, to not be suffering much from the stress fracture in my left foot that has never completely healed, to live in Austin where the weather is so mild and beautiful to be able to jump into the Guadalupe River and not feel even the slightest chill, to have been able to purchase a tripped out, rockin' 2009 Fuji road bike the day prior, and feeling the resistance of the wind against my face as I had zipped past the orange plastic cones while police officers and volunteers assisted in the race. I wiped a few tears from my eyes, being so happy to be in that moment. You'd never know that I was the very last person to be finishing the race, but it really didn't matter to me. I was thrilled with what I was doing and knew that the next triathlon I will sign up for, I'll do even better. Below is a self-portrait photo of my marked legs, with my entry number of 172, relaxing in the tube, as numerous door prizes were being distributed, and everyone anticipated the race results.
Here are a few shots of the small venue beforehand, with about 200 registered participants.
As it turned out, Lorraine finished first in our age division of 45 to 49, and I finished third, and we both got medals. Dave got 2nd in his 35 to 39 range, and Robin finished 6th out of eight in her age group, 50 to 55. The little chip timers strapped around our ankles stayed with us the entire race, with our ages inked in black Sharpies on the backs of our right legs. Our race number was on each of our thighs, both arms, and on one hand. Our bikes were labeled once with our race number as well.
Our age group was in the fourth start. Close to 200 people began or registered for the race, and 176 people finished. I highly recommend doing at least one triathlon. If I can do this, so can you!

CONGRATULATIONS KELLY, I am so proud of you. That is a huge accomplishment, I don't think I could even come close to finishing a race like that.

Way to go Kelly! You are the bravest person I know. That is so awesome and I am so happy you enjoyed it so much! Keep up the good work. That is so nice of your friends to include you and encourage you. I have never wanted to do a triathalon because I am afraid I'd poop out on the swimming leg of the race! But you did it. How far is 400 meters? What was your time?

That is so amazing. I love that you entered on a whim, and you enjoyed it so much. Not and easy thing to do. Especially since you have had some troubles with your feet. I am very proud of you. That is a huge deal! And not to mention that you also got a medal, brilliant.

Fabulous!!! So proud of you! You are giving me courage for mine on the 30th. I am just hoping to finish, too. Nice that you had a 400 meter swim in warm water, and got a new bike and were pretty healthy. WAY TO GO!!!

Julie, 400 meters is about a quarter mile. It was a relatively short distance, but I was gasping by the end of it. I wouldn't be able to do a 700 meter distance without training.

Kelly,
You look GREAT in these pictures, what's the deal? It doesn't even look like you were sweating!!! Thanks for all of the fun!
so worth it for the medal! reading your story was emotional. I know those same feelings. I haven't ever done a marathon, but i remember a few years ago running a race with my sister and coming into the finish, hearing the cheering, realizing i had accomplished a goal, i was so proud of what I had done. What a great job you did! I'm proud of you. maybe I'll have to start training and do the next one with you!
WOW! How exciting! I love it. You have inspired me.

This is all very motivating, you admit to not being very prepared/conditioned beforehand and that would be my number one roadblock (but now you've taken that away). The even more convincing roadblock though still exists. You see, you considered this as "such a huge thrill" whereas just even the thought of running for me makes a root canal seem pretty relaxing :)

That is the coolest thing ever! I love that you just said I will do it and without any training. I am very serious when I say, I think that I would have a hard time just going out there and doing that. It is quite the emotional high isnt it. Doing something like this is completly addictive. Others should try it!

Wow Kelly! That's amazing. Way to go. I can't believe you did it without any training and just on a whim. That's so cool and you made it look so fun, which made me think, maybe I could do that someday. :) Good job!

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
