Christmas in Colorado

Three of our four family members wanted to go to Colorado this year again, as opposed to my wanting to stay home. The majority ruled, so we planned to drive there, leaving on December 23. Then the Midwest got hit with a blizzard and a lot of snow and blinding ice warnings for the route we normally take up through Oklahoma. We debated on whether or not to go, and felt like it would be too dangerous. At the last minute, we found some plane tickets on good old Southwest Airlines and flew to Denver on Christmas Eve to return on New Year's Day.

Thank goodness we could take two bags each on Southwest without getting extra fees. We maxed out what we could check with eight suitcases total.

Christmas morning.

Three families worth of presents all piled up.
Aunt Deb and Uncle Mike's kids tore into everything rather quickly.
Michael seemed to like his new shirt from the Texans.
Christopher loved his new Nerf gun from Uncle Mike and Aunt Debbie.
Christopher also had a blast sledding and spend a lot of time outside enjoying the snow.
We attended church with the cousins and I saw this adorable Christmas sign in their church building from another ward's nursery and took a photo of it to remember it.
Posing with the cousins. From left to right, it's Christopher, Michael, Courtney, Lindsey, Kasey, and Aly.
Sun in our eyes and chilly outside, here I am with my husband.
I went running on two of the mornings while I was there, and in the process, lost my cell phone. I suppose tucking it in my new (somewhat loose..sorry for the TMI) sports bra isn't the best place for it, for future reference. So I had to backtrack my route and when I did, I took my camera with me to show where I ran. It was surprisingly not as cold as it may appear, and I was actually getting rather toasty while jogging.
I ran around the lake where Kelly's parent live, and this is the trail right behind their house where I attempted to burn off the calories from all the Christmas goodies that I'd indulged in. So far, no sign of my phone.
After Kelly dropped me off here in the car to retrace my steps, he drove around to meet me at the other side of this road next to a barn, just before the dam.
We parked again, right outside the fenced off dam, and Kelly miraculously found it, sitting in the snow. I was so relieved and grateful.
Here's a view of the lake where Kelly grew up, frozen over.
Aly spent the night at Grandma and Grandpa's house a few of the nights while we were there. So did Courtney.
We all went to the movies to see Avatar and The Blind Side a few days after Christmas.
Brenda invited us to a Minnie Mouse birthday party for Jade. Here she is with Grandma.
Brenda baked this cute little cake.
The kids played a Disney Bingo game, similar to Scene It.
Then they hit the piñata in the garage for a while as Uncle Joel raised and lowered Mickey Mouse.
Lindsey spent most of the nights away at her cousin Kasey's house plus one night visiting her good friend, Mindi. Both girls are seniors in high school and anxious to graduate and start college next fall.
We attended a New Year's Eve party at Aunt Deb and Uncle Mike's house. She posted pictures from the night here.
We didn't get much sleep, as we left for the airport on New Year's Day at 7:45 am, spending a long day on airplanes, as we couldn't be too picky, considering we booked our flights very last minute. We flew from Denver to Tulsa to Houston, then changed planes, and finally landed in Austin after 5 pm. We were happy to be home again.
Kelly and Christopher have been busy assembling the snazzy basketball hoop that Santa left for Christopher while we were gone. It's a big project! We're all excited to shoot some hoops in 2010. Happy new year to everyone we hold dear to our hearts.

I'm glad you found your phone - it is such a pain to replace those (especially the contact list). Good job for running while on vacation! I'm impressed!

I was kind of excited for you to lose your phone. Losing a phone means you get a new one! lol! I love getting new phones.
It looks brutal running in that snow. Way to go wonder woman. I am proud of you. I avoid running in the winter because I am such a baby! With you being so used to the balmy Texan weather and all, I am doubly impressed that you ran anyway.
How fun for the kids to be with their cousins on Christmas, that is always the best.

So glad you found your phone--how did we ever live without them? Christmas sounds like it was good, and I am proud of you for running in the cold.

Wow that really sounds like a fun and exciting adventure. Nothing quite like a last minute decision for some excitement. I bet it was lots of fun to be with so much family for the holidays. The snow looks really pretty from a distance.

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
