Lindsey appreciation day activities

Our girl loves the beach, so we took her to the nearest one here in Hsinchu to explore for the first time. The unbearable heat left us wishing for November or December temperatures, but we still enjoyed looking around, scoping out fun activities to do here in Taiwan a few months from now.
Bicycle rentals seem like an excellent option in the fall, but not during the moist and muggy August heatwave. The Tropic of Cancer runs right through Taiwan. To give you an idea where that latitude lies, picture central Mexico or the Bahamas. Yeah, that hot.
Christopher stuck his feet in the water and said it was as warm as our swimming pool back in Texas on a hot summer day.
Traffic along the beach-front was practically empty. It must not be the season for the locals to soak it all in either.
We decided to go downtown and explore the city after this.
Too bad we cannot swim during typhoon season, that's always my favorite time. :-)
This surrey looks like an excellent way to at least get a little protection from the sun.
However, the road seemed to go straight uphill.
Give us a few months' time, and we'll be back and ready to give it a spin. We liked these interesting bridges we saw.
Throughout the city, we'll spot traditional Chinese or Taiwanese looking structures like this here and there.
Driving around here in Hsinchu and Jhubei has been nightmarish. The first couple of times we each got behind the wheel, we were thankful to be alive and out of the car once we were back at our hotel room. The roads are filled with a lot more motorcycles, or what we would refer to as scooters, than cars, that dash in and out all over the place. It feels like you are playing a video game and obstacles come flying toward you from every direction at any time when you least expect it. And believe it or not, this is actually the EASY part of getting behind the wheel.
The challenging part tends to be navigating around town and trying to figure out where you are, which is close to impossible when you don't speak Chinese. Luckily, Taiwan has a fondness for English and thoughtfully puts English on a lot of signage on the highways and roads. That does help, but it is still really difficult to not get lost. It took me two hours to find my way back to the hotel room a few days ago when I went out driving by myself for the first time here, on a route that should have only taken 15 minutes. We went to Costco to get a new Garmin GPS. The roads still are in Chinese, but it should make it less of an ordeal to find my way home.
Rice, rice, baby! This whole row of rice was screaming for me to take its picture from the top of the escalator, but the Costco employee told me photography is not allowed there. Otherwise, I would have taken a picture of the largest can of tuna I've ever seen to post here too. It was massive. After buying the GPS, we could finally figure out how to get to one of the city's two big malls, then shop around. Lindsey picked this place for dinner to celebrate the day we adopted her, nineteen years ago today, when she was 33 days old.
They cook the food right in front of us.
It's still embarrassing for me to eat with chopsticks in public because I feel like a child. A fork and knife are much more efficient utensils to me. The rest of my family don't seem to be as traumatized by it.
We shopped around and bought a few things and Lindsey wanted to take a picture of this sweet little Hello Kitty bedroom.
Spending time with our one and only daughter on her special day was priceless. We're going to miss her soon when she's away at college. Happy Lindsey appreciation day, sweetheart! We love you!

I love seeing what different adventures you guys are up to, it will be fun to see how the year transpires! We are still in Austin and will probably be here until the end of Sept. I'm sad we will miss each other in Rexburg. Noelle is out here selling in our office as well, and we took the pictures of Avalynn out here, but she will be back in Rexburg in a few weeks as well. I think I am starting to confuse everyone with how much we move around!!

Just add that bedroom set onto the little bike that you wanted to get and I think that you would be set in the Hello Kitty world.

I love that you celebrate the day that the kids arrived in your home, as well as their birthdays. You and Kelly are such good parents your kids are very lucky to have you as loving parents.

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
