Coral snake in my backyard

There were some workers in my backyard today and showed me (because I don't speak Spanish very well) that there was a coral snake on the gate of my fence. I think he was asking me if I wanted him to kill it, but I'm not sure. I signaled using the strangling motion with my hands around my neck, but I was trying to tell them it was poisonous. I think they took that as a go ahead to eliminate him. That was fine too. Two of the men got a stick from the woods, then I told him I wanted to get my camera. I said, "no encuentro mi camera" and he said, "busca," so I went back inside to try to find it. I just grabbed my cell phone instead and got a couple of shots. As often as I have creepy crawly things in my world, I justed added a label for this subject. Some rather sickening past posts include the coral snake that Kelly spotted in the driveway, the tarantula outside my window, and then many still remember the giant redheaded centipede that came through the vents of my microwave one summer when the kids and Kelly were all in Colorado and I was home alone. The thought of it still gives me the creeps.

Lisa, keep in mind that we live on the greenbelt, or right next to the woods. That makes a big difference. I think the houses surrounded by concrete and asphalt don't have quite the issues as we do. Even our neighbors across the street have said they've never had a scorpion in their house, which we have. I think there's a big difference on the "inside" lots for getting spared some of these unwanted pests.

I'm not a big fan of poisons and things that can kill me. I do love black, red and yellow so to me that snake is is absolutely beautiful!

You are freaking me out! I wish you lived much further away so I could feel better about not having those creepy things where I live. But you ARE where we live! Except you're on a greenbelt. Makes a huge difference, right? Right!!!

LOL! Your post about your Texan critter/friends are my favorites for sure. They crack me up. That's so funny about the pool guys and all.
The yellow kill a fellow poem running through Kelly's mind is hilarious! The giant red headed centipede post is a classic. Keep up the good work sis and oh, by the way, get some Raid.

Oh dear, Kelly, you really live with some interesting creatures down there! My friend's daughter was in Houston for the summer doing an internship and once she got down there I sent her the link to your "Texas creatures" on your blog. She was so mad!! I guess it really freaked her out see those. She was like....thanks a lot Maryanne! (I think she survived okay and only had one or two encounters with some rather large spiders.)

I can relate, man! Just this morning I awoke to find an enormous... winged insect dead on my kitchen floor, swarmed with ants. Disgusting. It's gotta be the third time that's happened here in three weeks. And a few hours ago, some girls down the hall found a cockroach 3 inches long in their wardrobe. All the ones I've discovered in my apartment have been rather small - only up to an inch or an inch and a half.

Eeeew I hate snakes so bad! The only one I saw in real life (besides in a zoo) was when I lived in Austin. It was huge. Wow I just got the chills thinking about it.

Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party!

Hopefully this title, Book of Mormon Stories Pool Party , does not sound irreverent, because as an Activity Days leader, I felt compelled to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer event that is also uplifting, and after all, who doesn't love a splash in the pool on a hot day in August?  My current church calling, or official role that I volunteer for, allows me to plan two activities each month for girls ages 8 to 11, that will encourage them to learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them, to learn to do many good things.  This year's seminary course of study for high school students is The Book of Mormon, and since I am a huge fan of this inspired book of scripture, I came up with this idea to have each girl show up to my house with a written summary of one of her favorite stories from within its many pages, and share it with the rest of the girls, while outside in our swimsuits near our backyard swimming pool!  As each girl shares

Our new daughter!

This picture was taken at church a few days ago while Kelly was on his way to the US for work this week. We have some wonderful news to share.  We are adopting 7-year-old Yeh Min Yu, who has been in our home off and on the last couple of months.  There's a lot that goes into making this official, dealing with US Homeland Security to arrange for her immigration visa, Taiwan courts and Chinese documents, getting a home study done by a licensed, qualified person, applying for a passport.  You have no idea.  I'll be glad when it's all done, but I couldn't wait to share this bit of joy with everyone.  We will name her Hannah to go on her new US birth certificate.  She's excited and nervous to go to America with us.  She can say more than 100 words in English so far.  Some of her favorite things to say are "small dog, butterfly, apple, pig."  She says it more like pig-uh.  We love her and feel this is one of the reasons we came to Taiwan.  Who would have thoug

Elder Larson to return from Thailand soon

Soon is relative, I suppose. Our son has been away from home more than a year and a half as he has been volunteering as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since September 14, 2016. He will be home in four months and is working so hard, knowing his time there is winding down. He has been assigned to train Elder Ben Meyer, from Sydney, Australia, as they serve in Ubon, Thailand. Christopher has been there since November. We are very proud of his dedication and hard work. This week in Thailand, the new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, with his wife, Wendy Nelson, along with one of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and his wife, Patricia Holland, will be on their world ministering tour and be where our son is. The Church members and missionaries in Thailand are very excited and happy for this special visit! I can't wait to hear how it goes, and I look forward to pictures and stories to come.
